RAINY AND DRY SEASONS IN CAMEROON

Cameroon has two seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season begins in April and ends in November. Most streets, especially in the rural areas, are dirt roads, so they become very muddy during the rainy season, as you can see from the attached photos. Travel is very difficult, to a point where a simple trip can take three times as long, due to the condition of the roads. It is quite common for cars to get stuck on transit to remote villages, and are unable to move for several days. People sometimes have to spend one or two nights by their car on the road. It even happens that access in or out of town can be blocked because a car or large transport vehicle got stuck in the mud in the middle of the road. Depending in what part of Cameroon you are, the rains may come to an end mid October. The rainy season in the northern part of Cameroon has a rainy season that starts in May and ends in September.  Average rainy fall per year is between 1,500mm- 2,000 depending in what part of Cameroon you are. Most areas around the south coast get higher rain fall than areas in the northeast. Kribi, one of the cities around the coast, gets about 2,970 of rain each year.
The rainy season is also known as the planting season because this is the period where the planting of crops is done. In many parts of Cameroon, especially in the mountains where I grew up, there was the famous `seven day rain`, the name of which speaks for itself, and which takes place every year, usually in August. It can be a very challenging experience to try to carry on with one`s life when the rain simply does not stop for days on end.
The dry season begins in December and ends in March. During the dry season, it is very dry and dusty. The warmest months are between the month of March and May with a temperature of 40 degrees or higher in the northern part of the country, which is located in desert country. The air is very dusty and humid. During the months of October and November, you will have a clear view of the  beautiful mountains and surroundings. There is the presence of the strong `harmattan` winds from the Sahara desert, which carry sand and dust between December and February, turning the sky red, reducing visibility and leaving a film of dust on everything in sight. The best time to travel to Cameroon is between November and February during this harmattan which are the cooler and dry months. This period is the dry season.
